Cubs: Tawny Star Activities


Activity A:
  • Make a simple article such as a puppet, toy or game, papier-mâché item, woggle etc. and perform a puppet show.
  • Write a story, skit, poem or limerick.
  • Produce an original imaginative piece of art such as a mobile, sculpture, driftwood article, display of sketches or photographs, picture puzzle, or collage.
  • Create paper bag puppets and have them perform a puppet show (completes 2, A Requirements and 1 B Requirement of the Tawny Star as well as 1 requirement on Handicraft Badge)
  • Create a story using a variety of pictures provided (completes 1, A & B requirement for Tawny Star)
Activity B:
  • They can create their own museum display using photocopied pictures from the museums collection accompanied by a story of their creation describing the pictures/what is going on! (Completes 2, A Requirements and one B Requirement of the Tawny Star)
  • Tell a story using photographs, slides, video tape or puppets.
  • Paint a mural or do a poster for an event such as Fire Prevention Week, Scoutrees for Canada, Scout-Guide Week or any other special occasion.
  • Complete a Remembrance Day poster, which will be accompanied by a short presentation by the museum, on Canada’s involvement in the wars. (Completes 1, B requirement for the Tawny Star)

Cubs: Artist Badge

  • Arrange some items and draw and paint them.
  • Make a greeting card of your own design.
  • Create a print using original designs cut into linoleum, potatoes, or other kinds of blocks.
Activity A:
  • Cubs will have the opportunity to sketch the objects as found in the gallery (Completes 1 requirement of the Artist badge and 1 requirement of the Canadian Heritage Badge)
Activity B:
  • Make a greeting card using print blocks for the nearest holiday/event (Completes 2 requirements of the Artist Badge)

Cubs: Handicraft Badge

  • Make either a decorative article or puppet (completes 1 requirement for Handicraft badge, and Tawny Star)
Activity A:
  • Make two useful or decorative articles from wool, leather, string or other suitable material.
Activity B:
  • Make a puppet or marionette.

Cubs: Purple Star Activities



Activity A:
  • Give the history and draw a picture of the Canadian Flag. Also draw the flags of two other countries.
  • Make a presentation describing Canadian Space technology and travel.
  • In packs they will give the history of the Canada Flag (by reading materials provided) they will also draw a picture of the Canadian flag and two other flags.
Activity B:
  • In packs they will make a presentation on Canadian Space and tech, based on exhibit as well as information provided. (completes 1, A requirement of the Purple Star as well as one requirement of the Space Exploration Badge)
  • Learn about one of Canada’s peacekeeping missions. Talk to a veteran or soldier who has served on Canada’s behalf in a conflict or peacekeeping mission.
  • The museum will arrange to have a Veteran come and tell their story and answer questions. (Completes 1, B requirement of the Purple Star as well as a requirement for the Canadian Heritage Badge)

Cubs: Canadian Heritage Badge

  • Visit a local museum. Draw a picture of some of the exhibits or things you see. Show your pictures to your pack and tell them what you liked about the museum and what you learned from visiting it.
  • Draw or trace a simple map of Canada, showing the provinces and territories, capital cities, and other main features you can discover.
  • Learn about one of Canada’s peacekeeping missions. Talk to a veteran or soldier who has served on Canada’s behalf in a conflict or peacekeeping mission.
Activity A:
  • Sketch an object as found in the gallery and give a short presentation.
  • Completes 1 requirement of the Artist badge and 1 requirement of the Canadian Heritage Badge
Activity B:
  • Museum will provide maps to be traced
  • Completes 1 requirement of the Canadian Heritage Badge
Activity C:
  • The museum will arrange to have a Veteran come and tell their story and answer questions.
  • Completes 1, B requirement of the Purple Star as well as 1 requirement for the Canadian Heritage Badge

Cubs: Space Exploration Badge

  • Discuss the importance of space technology in Canadian living. This could include: Weather forecasts, Communications, Search and rescue operations, Map making, Promoting international cooperation between Canada and other countries
  • Make a report on or a scrapbook about an astronaut, mission team or space mission of your choice.
  • A presentation will be made regarding the exhibit. From this and handouts provided, they are able to create a report or scrapbook.
  • Completes 2 requirements for the Space Exploration Badge and 1 requirement for Canadian Heritage Badge

Scouts: Voyageur



Citizenship:
  • Contribute a total of five hours to your community by actively participating in three different community projects.
Activity:
  • Opportunities to volunteer here at the museum for special events.

Scouts: Pathfinder



Citizenship:
  • With other members of your patrol, meet with a member of local government or the legal system. Discuss with this person their responsibilities and the workings of their system.
  • Visit an industrial plant, business or educational centre. During your visit, find out about the types of jobs or careers that are available.
Activity A:
  • The museum will arrange to have a local politician discuss their responsibilities.
Activity B:
  • A visit to the museum will consist of a talk about the museum and a short tour as well as a talk about the professions that are available in the museum field.

Activity:
  • Through a presentation, exhibit talk and craft these components will all be covered.

Scouts: Heritage Badge



Space Exploration Badge:
  • Using museum resources, they will be able to identify different types of sources. Using these they will be able to compile information on the origins of Nepean, to create a report.
