Gavin Leishman
President
Mr. Leishman has been a Nepean resident for over 35 years. He was a Boy Scout and Cub leader in the Nepean community. He is his 5th year as Chairman of the Greater Nepean Chamber of Commerce.
He was elected to the board of the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation in 2006. An active member of the community Mr. Leishman has for the past 8 years chaired a Comedy Auction Fundraiser for the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation, raising over 300,000 dollars.
Mr. Leishman is also the President of the South Nepean Autism Centre (SNAC).
Mr. Leishman joined the Board of the Nepean Museum in September 2005. He was elected as Vice President in May, 2006 and President in May 2007.
Sherry Franklin
Interim Vice President
Sherry is a retired computer resource teacher with the Ottawa Board of Education and Ottawa University. She is currently a SUNY Postdam University Supervisor for Student Teachers. Sherry was married to former Nepean Mayor Ben Franklin (deceased) and is currently married to Andy Haydon, former Regional Chairman of Ottawa Carleton.
Major Richard Kenneth Malott, CD, MSC, FRPSC, FRPSL, AHF RETIRED
Former President
Major Malott (Ret’d) was born in Kingsville, Ontario near Windsor/Detroit on October 31, 1927. He received his early education in Kingsville and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (1946-1950) at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. In 1950, he joined the RCAF and in 1974 he retired from the Canadian Forces to assume the position of Chief Curator of Collections at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, Ontario.
He served at the CWM for 18 years, 17 years as the Chief Curator of Collections and one as Chief, Special Projects. From 1992-2000 he served as the Executive Director, Organization of Military Museums of Canada, Inc. operating from his home in Nepean, Ontario.
In 1992, Major Malott (Ret’d) joined the Board of the Nepean Museum, and served as a trustee from 1992–2003. In 2003, he assumed the role as president of the Nepean Museum until his retirement from that position in May, 2007.
He was married on February, 1953 to Dorothy Payne of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Malott’s have one son, Douglas, living in Montreal.
Councillor Alex Cullen
Trustee
Alex Cullen, Councillor for Bay Ward in Ottawa’s west end since 2001, is Chair of the City’s Transit Committee and a member of the City’s Community & Protective Services Committee and Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Boards of Ottawa Community Housing (the City’s social housing agency), Hydro Ottawa (the City’s electricity distribution company), the Ottawa Campsite Authority and the Rideau-Mississippi Valley Source Protection Committee.
Alex Cullen is also active in the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), serving on AMO’s Public Health Liaison Committee. Alex Cullen is the past Executive Director of the Council on Aging (1999-2000), a voluntary non-profit United Way agency dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all seniors in Ottawa.
Alex Cullen’s previous political experience includes serving as M.P.P. for Ottawa West (1997-99), member of Ottawa-Carleton’s Regional Council (1991-97), Member of Ottawa City Council (1991-94), and Trustee on the Ottawa Board of Education (1982-88).
Alex Cullen’s community experience is extensive. Currently he is a Patron of Languages of Life, a community agency providing translation services. He has served on the Board of Directors of:
- The West End Chronicle (a community newspaper)
- West End Legal Services (a legal-aid clinic)
- The Christmas Exchange (a registered charity)
- Glabar Park Community Association (as President)
- Federation of Citizens’ Associations (as Vice-President)
- Woodroffe High School Advisory Committee (as Chair)
- Westboro Kiwanis Club (as President)
- Hilson School Advisory Committee (as Chair)
George Albert Burbidge B. Eng, M. Eng
Trustee
George moved to Ottawa in 1960 from the country North of Toronto after graduation from Ryerson, to work for the National Research Council. Received B. Eng (Electrical Engineering) and M. Eng (Material Science) at Carleton University, then worked as a Research Associate at Carleton for eight years.
He joined Atomic Energy of Canada in 1975.He was responsible for the manufacture and installation of a small research reactor for universities.
George represented Canada at the Int'l Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations for many years before retiring in 1998. He became a Trustee of the Nepean Museum in 1998 and more recently a member of the Collections Committee.
Interests are history, curling and restoring old automobiles, farm and marine engines.
Frank Pineau
Trustee
Frank was born in December, 1936 in the town of Duvar P.E.I. At age 5 he moved to Pictou, N.S. where he graduated from Sir William Dawson High School and the Pictou Academy. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1955 and trained as a Medical Assistant.
During his time with the RCMAC Frank did Tours of Duty in Korea (peace time), Germany, Cyprus and Canada. He was discharged from the Regular Force in 1987, and served in the Reserve Force from 1987 - 1991, at which point he retired.
Frank currently enjoys his retirement golfing, boating, snow-shoeing bowling and woodwork. He also serves the community with Meals on Wheels.
